When will my dog go into heat next?
Enter the first day of her last heat and her size to see when her next heat is likely to start.
January 17
Her next heat could start from Sunday, January 17
Cycles are often irregular, especially in young dogs. Spayed dogs don’t have heat cycles.
How it’s worked out
How often
Most dogs come into heat about twice a year. Small breeds can cycle more often, sometimes three times a year, while giant breeds may only cycle every 12 to 18 months.
How long
A heat usually lasts about 2 to 3 weeks. A dog is typically most fertile around days 9 to 14, though this varies from dog to dog.
Questions
When is it urgent?
Contact your vet straight away if, in the weeks after a heat, she has a smelly or pus-like discharge, drinks much more than usual, seems tired or off her food, or has a swollen belly. These can be signs of a serious womb infection called pyometra.
When should I talk to my vet?
If her heats seem very close together, very far apart, or last much longer than three weeks, or if she hasn’t had a first heat by around two years old.
How accurate is this?
It’s an estimate based on typical cycles for her size. Tracking a few of her own cycles gives a much better picture of her personal rhythm.
